History
The story begins in 1898, when Sofia Wänttinen founded a restaurant on Helenankatu. Her café quickly flourished, and six years later she boldly relocated the business to Keskuskatu. As word spread, the name Central gradually found its way onto more and more lips. Soon, Central had established a loyal clientele and secured a firm place in Helsinki’s restaurant culture — a role it has proudly maintained through changes in ownership and generations.
In 1961, Central underwent a major transformation when the original building was demolished and its Jugend-style furnishings were sold. The restaurant moved to Pietarinkatu 15, where Central continues to live and breathe to this day.
For over a century, Central has provided the setting for memorable dining experiences, offering excellent food and drink. Its unique spirit has endured unchanged through the decades.
